Is P1 WiMAX REALLY 4G?
by Kashminder Singh

kashP1 WiMAX, the only WiMAX operator in Malaysia with a significantly sized commercial rollout, was recently in the news with its controversial Potong advertising campaign that invited Malaysians to cut their wired broadband connection and move to their wireless technology.

While the actual subject of that campaign was startlingly bold, there’s no denying that this was vintage ‘Michael Lai’ marketing in action. Michael Lai, who runs P1 currently, is synonymous with bold marketing campaigns in this industry. I credit Streamyx’s current stranglehold on the wired broadband market to his tenure as TMNET’s head honcho. His aggressive marketing campaigns back then were wildly successful. The Streamyx network added so many subscribers that it suffers from congestion and network quality issues till this very day.

Applications and software for mobile phones aren’t a new thing altogether. Back in the late 90s, smartphone enthusiasts were downloading and installing apps onto their phones. Then, there were only stores such as handango and getjar, catering to symbian, windows mobile and palm platforms. Most carriers and manufacturers often practise “walled gardens” where they don’t allow 3rd party apps to be installed easily. Also, it wasn’t easy to load the app onto your phone if you had zero tech knowledge.

Malaysia's fourth cellular operator, U Mobile commercially launched its 3G service about 18 months ago in April 2008. In March 2008, a month before its commercial launch, U Mobile had launched its Surf with U HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) wireless broadband service, providing competition to established giants, Maxis and Celcom.

In November that year, U Mobile introduced Mobile Live TV, the country's first mobile TV service based on the DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcast – Handheld) standard. Unlike mobile TV provided by its competitors, DVB-H is received on specially enabled phone bypassing the network, much like regular free-to-air and satellite TV, and it only uses the cellular network for backward traffic such as selections and feedback by its viewers.
