Just few month after v3.0 has been announced, the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) revealed the Bluetooth Core Specification Version 4.0. The latest version is aimed at efficient energy consumption unlike v3.0 that was all about speed.

According to SIG, this enhancement to the Bluetooth Core Specification allows two types of implementation, dual-mode and single-mode. In dual-mode, the new energy-saving feature is able to be integrated into existing Bluetooth controllers while the single-mode have a “Link Layer” for the same purpose.

Other v4.0 specs include short data packets transferred at 1Mbps, adaptive frequency-hopping, longer sleep periods, connection set up as low as 3ms, possible range of over 100 meters and full AES-128 encryption. Bluetooth SIG said that products with the updated Bluetooth standard will only arrive early next year. The world largest mobile phone maker, Nokia said that it would adopt the new Bluetooth standard.
