Kuala Lumpur, 20 January, 2010: The around 2,000 new students of the Limkokwing University of Creative Technology who are on courses of at least one year duration will each be given an Applie iPhone 3GS smartphone as part of their course fees.

They will use the iPhone to access their course time table, examination dates, examination results, course notes, to submit their course work, exchange messages and network with fellow students and staff, and to access other information on the university's student portal. During its first phase, the iPhone 3GS will provide students with a new platform to create new designs, applications and communication projects besides their use of traditional TV, radio and print media.

At the same time, the Apple Centre at Limkokwing Plaza in its Cyberjaya campus will have a Maxis outlet with especially trained staff to provide customer service and advice during weekdays.

“This is the first time in Asia where the iPhone 3GS is being used as part of a tertiary curriculum,” said Mohamed Fitri Abdullah, Maxis vice-president and head of the Enterprise and Carriet Business Division. Last year, Maxis had tied up with Cempaka School to offer similar iPhone-based learning to its students.

In support of this initiative Maxis Communications, which signed a memorandum of understanding with Limkokwing here today, has bundled selected packages with free phone calls between fellow students and teaching staff. For instance, students who subscribe to the Value Plus 150 plan will enjoy 38 hours of free phone calls and 500 free SMS messages per month to fellow students and staff on similarly tailored Maxis plans.

“While the students would benefit by subscribing to the plan, they are however not obliged to do so as they can still access the same portal and receive the same information through a web browser on a desktop, notebook or netbook PC, any other smartphone or Internet access device,” said Limkokwing vice-president of International development, Dato' Dr, Jayles Yeoh.

Limkokwing has 9,500 stidents at its Cyberjaya campus and another 1,000 in its Kuching campus. It has a presence in 77 countries and altogether caters to 30,000 students in 150 countries. According to Fitri, Maxis could possibly offer in the future similar packages to Limkokwing students in countries where Maxis has operations.
