For noisy disco warriors

Whilst Bluetooth headsets are a dime a dozen these days, few looks and feel as stylish as the Jawbone II. The Prime is made by San Francisco-based AliphCom which has an improved NoiseAssassin 2.0 technology and digital wind-noise filter. AliphCom and the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) originally perfected NoiseAssassin for battlefield use.

Look and feel

The most eye-catching part of the headset lies in its front panel. Unlike its predecessor, the Jawbone II is skinned with a bevelled diamond pattern which gives it a three-dimensional texture feel. Also compared to the Jawbone I, it has shrunk to half of its predecessor’s size.

The all-black coloured headset comes with a choice of two electrets microphones, three differently sized earbuds and four differently sized ear hooks that clip around the ear. Its NoiseAssassin and Talk buttons are located below its textured skin which gives it a touch of subtle elegance.

No Bluetooth headset can escape from LED lights but this one comes in the form of a very slim sliver of light. You also have a choice to turn it off, thankfully. One missing control would be its volume toggle. The idea behind it was that the headset is configured to adjust the volume automatically according to the environment. You can manually change the volume, by pressing the NoiseAssasin button until you get the right one.

For its Voice Activity Sensor (VAS) to work, the headset must be pressed against one’s face around the jawbone for enhanced noise cancellation. If it’s not touching the face, AliphCom claims that its Acoustic Voice Activity Detector enables the headset to perform as well or better than competing noise cancelling headsets. It also employs a digital signal processor (DSP) and a signal fusion algorithm to reduce wind noise.

Usage
The Jawbone II fits snugly around my ear and after a while, I didn’t notice its presence, though it was still attached. However, touching or adjusting it whilst active risked me inadvertently turning it off, so it’s best to attach it to the ear before turning it on.

To pair with any Bluetooth-enabled phone for the first time, press the Talk and NoiseAssassin buttons simultaneously for two seconds and enter a passcode. It will automatically re-connects to the headset each time the headset is powered on. The headset can be paired with two phones simultaneously and NoiseAssassin is on by default.

That done, incoming and outgoing calls were routed to the headset once the call was connected and it sounded good. NoiseAssassin works, especially when you are not right up by the noise source. For example, my voice sounded loud and clear at about six metres from a ringing firebell in the same room, sounding rather muted.

The Talk and NoiseAssassin buttons can be used to answer or reject calls, change the volume, redial the last number, initiate voice dialling if your phone supports it, answer an incoming call during calls or to turn NoiseAssassin off and back on again during calls.

Its magnetised charger head holds the headset in place whilst charging, with the charger cable either connected to the USB port of a PC or to its main charger. However, the 13A socket adaptor provided with the review unit did not match the charger’s North American style flat pins.

Overall
The Jawbone Prime is classy-looking, convenient and light but commercial units should come with a matching 13A adapter. Priced at RM499, it is worth every sen due to its NoiseAssasin and voice-enhancing technology that actually works, just as advertised.

Standard Package
Price RM499
Jawbone II, three different sized earbuds, four different ear loops, USB charger cable, mains charger, 13A adaptor, manual

Features
Size/Weight:  12.7 x 12.7mm/10g
Bluetooth version: 1.1, 1.2, 2.0
Standby time: Up to 192 hours
Talk time: 240 minutes
Others: NoiseAssassin, DSP, wind cancelling.

+ Pros
• NoiseAssasin works nicely
• Voice enhancement technology
• Fashionable design with wide array of
earbuds and hooks

- Cons
• Pricier than normal Bluetooth headsets
• No physical volume rocker

It’s true that the Jawbone II is much more expensive than other Bluetooth headsets, but that’s the price you pay for possibly the best of its kind. It would be even more interesting to see what their latest – Jawbone PRIME is capable of.
