Judging by a report in a local paper, it looks
like Malaysians might have to wait longer for the Apple iPhone to make its way
here. According to a report in The Star, none of our telcos have successfully
negotiated a deal with the tech giant. Officially the three telcos reported
that discussions are still ongoing.
The problem might have to do with the
business model Apple is adopting. In other markets where the phone is
available, it is sold through a single telco and the revenue is shared between
the two companies. That is a model Malaysian telcos are not familiar with. We
also wonder if the size of our market is big enough to be of real interest to
Apple. We’re guessing China,
Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan are
likely to be of higher interest to Apple. Reports have emerged saying Japan is likely
to be the first Asian country to get the iPhone officially.
Eager buyers unwilling to wait for official sets have for months now been able to get unlocked iPhones overeas, online and even in some stores.
