Assassin’s Creed published by Gameloft and it works on Java so any decent phone should be compatible. The story is based on the Third Crusade and player takes the role of Altair who is one of the finest assassins in the land but was demoted due to some unknown internal conflict.

In order to rise up the career ladder, player will have to infiltrate, kill, assassinate and escape. While at it, there are power-ups like Memory Blocks and Health Restorers to be collected via a flurry of little blue squares. The 2D environment is produced up to great details making the background coherent with Altair’s acrobatic combat actions such as running up ladders and kicks them away from walls to close gaps, shimmy along narrow ledges and swing across killer trench, vaulting over spiky pits and perform some impressive wall jumps.

Throughout the game, screen is splashed with blood at great frequency; when player successfully eliminate major targets, three-pane art sequence will be presented as an eye candy to reward player’s hard work. Other main attractions of the game are the use of cut scene. Whenever there is danger ahead, the viewpoint will be forwarded upfront for the player.

There are also instances where game speed is deliberately slowed down to give an impact on certain stunts, for example, horse jumping over a trench. The use of such technique, make the game somewhat enjoyable, just like watching a movie. Throughout the mission, there are several goodies for Altair to pickup; they are the grappling hook, crossbow and bombs. Players will have to figure out how and where to use them, but generally it is pretty intuitive. If you didn’t succeed in the first trail, you will know what to do next. As a whole, I think Assassin’s Creed is quite a stunner; I really did enjoy 2~3 hours of AR tapping through the numeric pad.

Product : Beowulf
Developer : Gameloft
Publisher : Gameloft
Genre : Action/Adventure
Players : 1
Format : J2ME
Available at : Maxis / Celcom / DiGi
Price : RM8.00

If you have gone for the movie, the game narration can be skipped. Like any other action game, Beowulf bundles in the standard jumping, rope swinging, vine climbing and spike dodging. There is also some maze for player to solve using special tools. These tools are easily located near the maze and are for one time use only.

One of my favourite tools is a giant pillar which Beowulf used to swing his enemy till kingdom come. One hit is all it takes to shred enemies into pieces. Another tool which you will come across often is a big giant circular rock. Give it a slight push and you can see your enemies steamrolled beneath it. These tools are also used to clear away obstructing walls. Generally speaking, the game is actually quite simple and there is not much of a surprise installed for player; but somehow I find it very entertaining, crushing down the enemies.

There are also fatal moves which Beowulf can execute if he is near enough to the enemy. The first is the ‘Almighty Headbutt’ and the second ‘Beowulf Dismemberment’, I admit I made the flashy name up but I assure you that the real stuff are more enticing. A bit of complaint though, I do have some problem mastering the special skills. These skills are not mentioned in the game, I only found out about their existence in Help options half way through.

No wonder I have such a hard time defeating the hammer-wielding barbarians. If players can learn and master these special skills earlier on, obliterating your foes will be like a walk in the park. These skills consist of Giant Attack which need to be charged up by holding down the ‘5’ key. Power Smash can be executed when Beowulf is up in the air by pressing ‘8’ which make him stomp down dealing great damages.

When Beowulf is rolling, pressing ‘5’ will execute the Air Attack, doling damage upwards, good for killing those annoying vultures and for close range attack, press ‘*’ to throw axe. The ultimate move, Rage Explosion is executed when the ‘0’ key is pressed, it deals out continuous damage to the enemy but will only work when enough rage is accumulated.

Let’s spur up our life with some serious gore and action! Log on to your operator site (DiGi, Maxis or Celcom) and have some bloodlust fun!
