Image Now everyone can surf; that is the idea in mind when Sunway Group and Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd (P1) launched the Wireless@Sunway project. Today, both companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enable over 100 hotspots in Bandar Sunway.

Phase 1 of the project, costing RM1.5 million, offers WiFi service with speed ranging from 128Kbps to 1Mbps has been made available in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall, Sunway Lagoon Theme Park, Monash University Sunway Campus, Sunway University College, Sunway Metro and Sunway Mentari.

According to the CEO of Packet One, Michael Lai, most of the WiFi hotspots are located in Sunway Pyramid Shopping Mall and it is free to surf on the network. The rest of the WiFi hotspots are under P1's very own WiFi Hot Zone coverage and are chargeable for as low as RM5 per day.

“Over 100 WiFi hotspots have been activated within these areas, currently benefiting business users, students and visitors of Bandar Sunway. This will also benefit some 30,000 residents and two million visitors to Bandar Sunway,” said Sunway Group’s President, Dato’ Chew Chee Kin.

Phase 2 of the project involves deploying WiMAX to cover more areas in Bandar Sunway. Lai said that P1 is willing to work with any parties or city halls to enable similar services in other towns.

Packet One is one of the licensees that were awarded with a 2.3GHz WiMAX license in March last year. It plans to be the first to offer commercial WiMAX services in the country by the end of this year.
