Mobile WiMAX have taken another step forward. Over in Jackson Hole, Wyoming,
US, the first
certified implementation of mobile WiMAX have taken place. Two companies,
Alvarion silicon and DigitalBridge Communications are behind this small scale
deployment.
The network, running on the 2.5Ghz spectrum, allows mobile
broadband on the go, just like 3G broadband.
Last month, the WiMAX Forum certified ten mobile WiMAX
products that use the 2.5GHz band. The Alvarion's BreezeMax 2.5 chipset, which
will be used in Jackson Hole, is one of it.
The other nine certified products include products from
Airspan Networks, Beceem Communications, Intel, Samsung, Sequans Communications
and ZyXEL, each of which received certification for a mobile module. Motorola,
Samsung, and Sequans received certification for their base-station products.
A certification from the WiMAX Forum ensures that all the
products are interoperable with one another. It is expected that more than 100
products will be certified by the end of 2008, with over 1,000 by 2011,
according to the WiMAX forum.
In Malaysia,
Packet One which is one of the four mobile WiMAX licensees, is expected to roll
out soon the first large-scale mobile WiMAX deployment of its kind in South-East Asia.
