Image This time round, we bring you a nice productivity application specially for Nokia 9500 and 9300 devices.

“People often have great ideas while sitting on the loo, according to a new research carried out on 500 adults by coach operator National Express in Britain.” which I stumbled upon at http://www.metro.co.uk/news - UK’s online newspaper. I was not a bit amazed by this news. I myself do quite a lot of thinking and brainstorming on the throne.

The only problem is that most of my ideas get buried the moment I flush the toilet. Now if only there is a simple way to jot it down then and there; something small and personal enough to be carried into the toilet without others casting a suspicious eye. A smartphone is a great solution but the somewhat limited alphanumerical input system together with some cumbersome software is a major deterring factor.

But thanks to “MobileMind Alpha” I finally got that last hurdle solved. All my great ideas will now have a chance to surface and materialise. If you are a thinker like me, I would like to recommend MobileMind developed by Twmdesign (a creativity company).

MobileMind is a jotter application and Freemind editor and viewer for the Nokia 9500 and 9300 handsets. It’s built specifically for these Symbian S80 devices. This application has been designed to facilitate rapid entry and grouping of data for anything from shopping list to planning a university essay.

Before digging deeper into MobileMind’s functionality, it would be useful to introduce what FreeMind is all about. FreeMind is a premier free mind-mapping software written in Java (Do look into http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mind_map to know more about mind mapping). It is licensed under the GNU General Public License. Freemind provides extensive export capabilities utilizing XHTML which allows a user to create a mapped image with links to a folding outline. Basically, it is a very useful application for building mind maps and putting ideas into a visual layout.

Since Freemind is excellent for dragging items around, printing and exporting to different format; great care has been put into the development of MobileMind to ensure accurate round tripping. For example, documents can be edited on both the mobile device and PC without loss of data. Freemind features which are not supported by MobileMind are preserved intact.

Since Soft Approach focuses on mobile software; I won’t elaborate further on Freemind. But if you are really interested in it, do Google it out; it is a great software!

So, back to MobileMind, There are two ways you can use it: Image
1. As a mobile partner for Freemind.
2. A jotter replacement. Mobile mind is a great note taking application, storing notes hierarchically for easy navigation and categorization.

MobileMind saves data using XML based .MM format. The key advantage of this is that data is still accessible on other platforms. The software is still under intensive development (it’s only at Alpha stage) and some of the features to come include icons and images; Mindmap view; colour settings as currently colours set in Freemind are shown, but one cannot change or set them in MobileMind; customization of font typeface and size which is to be implemented in parallel with Mindmap view.

If you have a Nokia 9500 or 9300, you can download MobileMind Alpha from the official Twmdesign website at http://www.twmdesign.co.uk/mobilemind.

In that webpage, part of the introduction goes as follows: “Since most ideas come to you away from a PC, perhaps on the toilet or the bus, mobile mind mapper is ideal format for brainstorming and ad hoc note taking on the move. The benefit of MobileMind is that you can simply drag the document over to the PC when you are at home or work and continue working on it on the large screen.” Now, that explains why Twmdesign came up with such a freeware. It is to answer peoples’ needs when great ideas come at the toilet! Well, thanks to them, I’m also one of the beneficiaries.
