December had always been my favourite time of the year. Christmas season is a joyous celebration and a good way to commemorate this special month is to give someone a gift. Hey, gamers need some lovin’ too, you know.
I have ignored my fellow N-Gagers for far too long, so this month’s column is dedicated to them. Here’s my tip on the top three games to get for this holiday season.
Pathway To Glory: Ikusa Islands
The sequel to last year’s best-selling N-Gage game, Pathway To Glory: Ikusa Islands (PTG: II) takes players to the other side of the world during World War II after the events in the first game. There is a new enemy team, the Japanese, with a whole mass of new and deadly weapons made especially for PTG: II.
The excellent controls and commands have been retained while new elements have been added to spice up gameplay. The accompanying storyline is derived directly from the pages of WWII’s history, where players can once again experience authentic battle between the Allies and Japanese forces just before the final moments of the war in the Asia Pacific region.
All new weapons, vehicles and armouries will give veteran players a whole new take on attack and defence strategies. Weapons have a more destructive range now that the game designers have included a mortar launcher. Your troops are no longer safe behind a fortified wall! This in turn will intensify the gameplay as the player will have to rethink his strategies.
Graphics, animation and sound effects have been tweaked and refined, while the accompanying background music suits the dreary and gloomy mood of war. The online play as well as the Bluetooth two-player match / cooperative mode make PTG: II a sweeter package and a worthwhile buy.
Asphalt: Urban GT 2
I may be featuring yet another sequel – this time to a popular racing on the game deck, but I have a valid reason. Asphalt: Urban GT (A: UGT2) has shown what can be achieved on the N-Gage.
This time around, the game designers have pumped up the adrenaline with their new Visual Effects that gives a high-speed sensation. They have also secured more well-known car brands like Mitsubishi, Mercedes, Mini Cooper and Subaru to the available mix of Aston Martin, Lamborghini and Hummer (to name a few), A: UGT2 also surpasses its predecessor with its improved 3D engine graphics and sound effects.
Something new is the inclusion of the all-new collision detection system, where some of the more insane crashes (ala Burnout series on the PS2) can be ‘achieved’ when you smash into the environment like walls and lamp posts or other cars. The chase mode has been souped up as well, shaking off not only police cars but helicopters too that are out to put a stop to your (illegal) racing enthusiasm. And if you have an N-Gage buddy, try the Bluetooth head-to-head races for some rubber-burning excitement.
X-Men Legends II: Rise Of Apocalypse
This game received mixed reactions when the first game was ported over to the N-Gage, but I can safely say that the sequel fares much better. X-Men Legends II: Rise Of Apocalypse sees old and new faces from both sides of the balance: Professor Xavier’s X-Men and Magneto’s Brotherhood of mutants.
This time, though, both sides must join forces to put a stop to Apocalypse and his Four Horsemen who are bent on the destruction of humanity. Mixing action elements of a beat-them-up game with role-playing simulation, X-Men Legends II continues the Legend series with power-ups learnt from experience points gained from combat – either hand-to-hand or through the good ol’ mutant powers of Cyclops’s Optic Blast or Wolverine’s Berserker Barrage.
As in the previous game, you will move in a team of four mutants; which you can freely choose. The ability to change characters on fly during the heat of battle is still available, so if you think the AI-controlled Magneto is doing much worse than your Rogue, switch instantly to control him and let the AI handle the other three while you whoop the bad guys’ @$$es. Or get up to four friends to join in with their N-Gages over Bluetooth.
