Her aptly-titled first album, Di Sini Bermula, produced a hit single Hakikat Cinta in 1999, but it was her song Seandainya Masih Ada Cinta from her second album in 2001 that made her a household name. Commonly referred to as Malaysia’s answer to Beyonce, Dayang has come a long way and recently was the winner of Irama Global Anugerah Era 2005.

Amazingly, Dayang does not own a mobile phone. MW finds out why…

MW: How come you don’t have a mobile phone?!?
DN: Actually, I used to be crazy about phones, especially Nokia phones because they are so user friendly. But after I lost my Nokia 6600 two years ago, I decided not to buy a replacement.

MW: Why not?
DN: I was really fed up at the time because I lost the phone just a week after buying it. I told myself I’d wait for a while before replacing it. Before I knew it, two years have gone by!

MW: But why get so upset over a lost phone?
DN: It wasn’t just the phone that was lost. I had just bought a 256MB memory card to store extra photos. And of course my SMS messages were lost too.

MW: Ooh… anything naughty?
DN: No lah, just personal messages and photos that are now lost forever. So fed up!

MW: Isn’t it difficult doing without a phone?
DN: Well, even if I had a phone, it wouldn’t be me holding it but my sister, Donna, who’s my advisor and confidante. She manages all my communications. Not having a phone also makes it easier for me to maintain my privacy.

ImageMW: How so?
DN: My fans always ask me for my phone number and I wouldn’t want to reject them or lie to them. So, if I don’t have a phone and I can truthfully tell them I can’t give them my number because I don’t have one.

MW: But don’t you sometimes wish you had your own phone?
DN: I have to admit, with all these cool new phones coming out, I’m tempted. But which one to get? So many to choose from. Maybe I’ll get a 3G phone.

MW: But what are you gonna tell your fans when they ask for your number?
DN: Good question… I guess the truth, that I need to maintain my privacy. I think they will understand.

MW: Are you a web-savvy person?
DN: I do use the Internet quite a bit. I check my mail. I search for lyrics online. I download hard-to-find songs. I also have my own blog.

MW: What’s your blog address?
DN: Go to www.dayangnurfaizah.blogdrive.com. It’s a place for my fans to keep track of my activities. They send me lots of pictures of my performances and I post them up there.

MW: Do you chat online with friends?
DN: You mean instant messaging? No, I don’t have time for that. But I do use Skype to call my family (in Sarawak) cheaply. It’s so convenient and saves on phone bills.

MW: Is there an e-mail fans can use to contact you?
DN: Yes, there is. It’s This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it They can reach me there.

MW: Why 2007?
DN: My birthday is on 20 July!

MW: And how old are you now?
DN: I’m 24 this year.

MW: What kind of music do you listen to?
DN: I listen to all kinds… jazz, R&B, pop. My brother likes rock so he’s listening to Led Zeppelin, Nirvana… punk juga dengar.

MW: Who are your Top Three favourite artistes?
DN: Alicia Keys, Beyonce and Erykah Badu.

MW: Do you have an MP3 player?
DN: Yeah, I do. I just got my friend to buy me an iPod nano from Singapore when it came out!

MW: You have a new CD out, right?
DN: Yes, but it’s actually a repackaging of an old album. It’s call Dayang Sayang Kamu. There are five new tracks and two remixes.

MW: Do you write your own songs?
DN: So far no but I’m learning to write my own lyrics. It’s not easy ‘cos I’ve never fallen in love before. Never had a boyfriend even. I believe you have to have either been in love or putus cinta in order to write a good love song.

MW: Never fallen in love… wow! What’s your idea of Mr. Right?
DN: Someone handsome… but seriously, I believe in true love. I know somewhere out there, there’s someone for Dayang.
