Charles F. Moreira
Andrew Cheong, General Manager Nokia (M) Sdn Bhd
It’s been almost ten months since you took over at Nokia. What’s it been like since then?
I am enjoying the job. I’ve worked previously at telcos like Sprint and TimeDotCom so it’s not like I’m in a totally new industry. My last job was also with a FMCG (Fast Moving Consumer Goods) company so you can say I’m at home at Nokia.
What’s the phone industry like right now?
It’s an exciting time to be in the mobile industry. This is the second wave for the mobile phone industry. Everyone is coming up with converged devices which have everything packed in them. Imagine a phone like the Nokia N95. In one small package you have a high megapixel camera, GPS and the works. I’m delighted to be associated with a company that is coming up with such great products and I aim to keep Nokia in the leadership position.
Have you always been a Nokia fan or does it come with the job?
No, I’ve really been a true blue Nokia fan for ages. In fact, I’m probably one of the earliest users of Nokia in Malaysia. I had a Nokia during the days of 018 (Mobikom) and 010 (Celcom Art900) phone services. I remember buying phones from O’Connors back then.
What’s your strategy for maintaining Nokia’s No 1 position?
We want to continue to be close to our customers. We want to have many touchpoints with them. That’s why we have been having workshops and seminars as well as roadshows. We want people to actually try Nokia devices. Only then will they truly understand what these devices can do.
How are you working to make the experience of owning a Nokia mobile device even better?
We are working very closely with our business partners to ensure that they explain the many functions of Nokia devices to purchasers. Nokia is also increasing the number of support centres nationwide this year. We will announce the locations as they open for business.
What phones are you using right now?
I’ve been using the N95, E65 and E90 phones recently. Plus some devices I can’t talk about yet.
On what device do you primarily receive email these days? On your mobile phone or on your notebook PC?
I read my emails on my phone. In fact I get a lot of my office work done right on my phone. The Nokia ESeries devices are made for business use. And if you need to do a lot of word processing, you can even get one of those Bluetooth keyboards for even easier typing.
What do you do in your leisure time?
I’m a family man so obviously I spend as much time as possible with my family. I also used to play a lot of tennis but these days there’s less of that and a little bit of golf.
On a personal level, what would you like to achieve at Nokia?
I have a great team at Nokia and I want to see everyone of them achieve their full potential. I will be truly delighted to see them all become very successful.
