Security is something that nobody thinks of when everything is nice and dandy, but once gotten into trouble, you will acknowledge its importance. The same scenario is applicable to our mobile devices as more and more functions are incorporated onto them. From personal data such as contacts, photos or MP3 to even work related documents and schedules; all can be saved into the phone. But saving important data in mobile devices may be deemed dangerous if there is no security built onto the devices. So let’s dip into some of these Symbian security applications.
First on the list, Guardian. Well, you won’t have Kevin Costner rescuing your phone after it had been stolen but hey, at least your data will not fall into the wrong hands. Guardian is an antitheft system for Symbian OS Series 60 devices. Every time you switch on your mobile telephone, Guardian proceeds with authentication of the inserted SIM card; if authentication fails, Guardian lock down the phone and sends a notification SMS message to a previously set telephone number. In addition, the system even features remote control functions, such as recovering phonebook contacts, deleting photographs, sms, video and audio data.
If you want to play detective and track down the culprit, Guardian assists you by providing information about the thief. The application monitors activities from SMS sent and received, to incoming and outgoing calls and even contacts added into phonebook. If that is not enough to give you a clue, the movements of your mobile can even be tagged using the GSM cell-id localization. The cool feature about all of these is that all remote commands are done secretly without the culprit knowing it. Guardian application is a freeware but if remote command is your interest, do donate some spare change to Marco Bellino, the creator of the application for his hard work. This program tackles the security issue from a different perspective compared to Guardian. Let’s quote an example; one may not mind friends scrolling through his/her new smartphone, but still might be conservative on some confidential content stored in it. This is where X Safe can play its part, the application is an assistant for secure and convenient managing of all important information.
It functions by keeping sensitive information private and password protected so that you won’t be afraid to store credit cards’ or calling cards’ numbers, user names, passwords, accounts (bank, internet, and email), web pages, contacts and much more. Imagine the peace of mind you can get by only having to remember just that one password.X Safe provides flexible and fully customizable user interface, such as tree view and list view modes, it also supports custom templates. If you get up on the wrong side of the bed; and groggily forget to bring your handphone along, do rest assured. The software is a personal SMS server and you can access information stored in X Safe anywhere by SMS. Just send authorized request to your phone, and requested information will be sent back to you as a Short Message within few seconds. You can try out the application by downloading through http://www.epocnova.com/xsafe.html. If you really love it, it’s yours for US$17.40Last but not least, Spy! by Iolan Software.
Instead of providing security to your mobile phones, this piece is unique. It sounds an alarm when someone is trying to sneak into your cubicle and peep at your confidential documents left lying on desk; or maybe peeking into your computer screen which you forgot to lock before going to the loo. By using the integrated camera, movement can be detected and if required, pictures can be taken too to identify the perpetrator. Ever wonder why the cookie jar emptied faster than you realized? Put it into silent mode and catch the cookie monster red-handed. The application cost US$19.45 and is available at http://my-symbian.com/main/index.php. Just don’t forget to switch it off when the janitor is scheduled to clean up your dustbin, wouldn’t want him to get a heart attack.
