A Google Phone?
These rumours (that’s our stand for now) appeared to have begun when Google officials in Spain and Portugal sort of confirmed that they are considering the idea of a mobile phone.
Taking the cue from this statement, the rumour mill has gone into full swing and all kinds of conjectures (including, gasp! leaked photos) are floating around the Net.
However, the truth may be less that that.
It may finally pan out to Google just coming up with a mobile operating system or an application that would run on many brands of phone instead of a physical Google phone.
We are not sure yet then as to whether its Apple or Microsoft that should be worried. Since it’s Google we are talking about here, maybe both should. Not to mention the other phone brands and the Symbian guys.

Ultramobile Dopod
Dopod has launched an interesting new device. It’s more than your average smartphone but not quite a notebook PC. The ultramobile U1000 has a 5 inch touchscreen, 3megapixel camera, an 8GB hard drive, GPS and PC functionality and you won’t need a notebook backpack.
The U1000 saves space smartly with its magnetic QWERTY keypad which attaches magnetically to the face of the U1000. It works as a screen protector – until you pull it off when it becomes a keyboard. You have to put it in a slot above the screen and, voila, you have a tiny looking laptop.
The U1000 is a 3G device with HSDPA capabilities. Users requiring more memory won’t have a problem because the U1000 comes with the MiniSD slot.
The only downside would be the pricing as we understand it’s going to cost an arm and a leg.

8 Wonders of Sony Ericsson
Sony Ericsson has not been known for a big line-up but that changed this week when it launched eight phones. There will be two new Walkman music phones and two Cybershot digital camera phones as well as the four low-end phones.

Walkman phones

W610i features most of what we see in W880i. The difference is that it doesn’t support 3G but it is EDGE enabled with FM radio and the usual Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera and M2 memory card slot. The Sony Ericsson W610 will be offered in Plush Orange or Satin Black according to user’s choice.
Cyber Shot phones
The latest in Sony Ericsson’s Cyber Shot camera phones is the K550i that includes a 2 megapixel camera and 3D gaming. The K550i shall be available in two colors, Orange Zest and Swift Blue.
The K810i builds on to the similarities of K800, supports 3G networks with video calls and also comes equipped with a PhotoFix. The application further enhances brightness and contrast for pictures taken. This beauty comes with a 3.2 megapixel Cyber-shot camera with auto focus and a Xenon flash.
Budget phones

For those wanting a mobile phone just for snapping pictures, the K200i would do the trick. This budget camera phone stores up to 40 images and accessing the album and camera can be down with a one click dedicated button.
Just like the K200i, this is a budget camera phone with an added feature, a FM radio. Users would be able to store up to 10 pre-set stations to save time in hunting for a radio channel. Finally, the K220i comes in two finishes: Frost White or Ocean Blue.
Sony Ericsson’s J110i is a standard candy bar for simple, straightforward text messaging and making phone calls. A robust, solid phone with a bright 65k color STN screen, the J110i gives up to nine hours' talk time and room for up to 200 phone numbers.
The other candy bar, the J120i, has the same easy to use features as J110i, such as a single-icon menu and one-click access. An added feature is the FM radio, which also comes with a loudspeaker for a wider audience. This can also be used as a speakerphone when you get tired of the radio and decide to call a relative or friend.

China goes ahead with 4G
While 3G is finally beginning to take off in other countries, China has gone way ahead by testing its own first 4G network. The system gives users speeds up to 100 megabytes per second, which is obviously, way faster compared to today’s 3G speed.
The 4G research program was started in 2001, and dubbed the FuTURE Project (Future Technology for Universal Radio Environment), as part of China's high-tech development plan. It is composed of 10 leading domestic institutions.
According to the Tech News World website, the project has got hold of more than 200 copyrights, positioning China as the leader in 4G technologies research. China has a goal to be put 4G technologies into commercial use between 2006 and 2010.
Samsung has already released 4G technologies in South Korea with similar capabilities so it looks like the 4G race is on.

Mobile touchscreens set to be hot in 2007
If the year 2006 was remembered as the year that thin or slim was in, 2007 is shaping up to be breakout year of touchscreen. Touchscreen has almost suddenly become a favorite among users and manufacturers alike. This feature is also set to be used in remote controls and portable pads that can be used for home automation.
Although this technology is not new in the market, the launching of high-profile products such as the iPhone had got users becoming more aware of touchscreens on mobile phones and manufacturers competing to produce more mobile phones with such features.
Even though there are draw backs such as the cost and consummation of power, the increased demand of such products could help to bring the prices down and improvisation of battery life.
