You’ve probably heard Nisha’s infectious laugh and JD’s politically (in)correct remarks every Monday to Friday night from 8 to 10 on Red104.9. Their voices are so recognizable but yet we bet most of you couldn’t recognise them on the streets.
Despite their crazy schedule, Mobile World sat them down (which was very difficult, literally!). They are zany off and on air so it was very interesting to hear them talk sans script.

What’s your phone like?
N: It’s a Motorola SLVR L7. Very sweet.
J: I have three phones actually. My Nokia 3310 is so ancient but it is SMS friendly and the Sony Ericsson J210i is to support another number. I’ve also downloaded a lot old school games such as Pacman and Space Invaders onto my Sony Clie 7625, which also serves as my PDA.
Which phone are you eyeing next?
N: Ooh, I love the Nokia N93! It’s just awesome.
J: I’m waiting for the Sony Ericsson W850 to arrive and I can hear it calling my name already. A BlackBerry would be great too.
Any mishaps happened to your phone?
N: My previous phone got stolen! Argh, I went to a Mamak shop to have dinner and I turnedaround for a split second and it was gone. The thief just took off.
J: Mine’s still safe as you can see (laughs).
How important is your phone to you?
N: I’ll die without my phone! All my photos, reminders and contacts will be lost forever.
Like the other time when it was stolen, I was so pissed and depressed.
J: It is very, very important especially personal contacts. My nightmare is that someone will get hold of my phone and circulate certain celebrity contacts.
Are you into mobile games?
N: My favourite is Snake. I was so addicted to it when I had a Nokia.
J: I use one specific phone as my mobile game console. Right now it’s all about the fun games we used to play when we were younger.
When do you usually play?
N: Sometimes we spend a lot of time waiting in make-up or for shootings, those games come in handy.
J: All the time! Even at work.
What other gadgets do you own?
N: I’ve got a really old Acer Travelmate laptop and an MP3 player. Nothing much, I might add.
J: My other gadget would be a Samsung YEPP. Love it to bits.
Do you give out your mobile number to listeners?
N: We have a bunch of regulars that listens to our show and many of them became our friends so they have our numbers. Of course we are a bit cautious who we give our number to, especially JD who only gives it to females.
J: Hey, can’t help it if they like me. Anyway we give out our contacts carefully though.
To avoid stalkers?
N: Tell them about the girl.
J: Erm… It was nothing actually. She mistook me for another deejay, that’s all.
N: No, I mean the other girl.
J: (laughs). She is a regular listener that sends me weird forwarded emails and also some personal ones as well. But overall they are very nice people.
What is your segment all about?
N: Basically our show is about fun, very light.
J: We don’t want listeners to be stressed when they are on their way back or chilling at home.
Is there a difference between the Urbanitez and The Vinyl Frontier show?
N: We play up a lot of girls versus guys thing on our show. Just to keep up the lively banter and jokes to keep our listeners involved. We also have Buzzbits where we chat about what is happening in the entertainment world.
J: So we have this ‘The Battle of Mars and Venus’ segment where at the end of the week the losing side has to do something, like a forfeit. Pictures will be taken and we’ll put it up on our website.
How are the forfeits like?
N: You should have seen JD coming in and doing the entire show in his boxers!
J: That was cruel man. The studio was freezing. But this week the girls are losing so we are deciding how to punish Nisha. Maybe get her to eat something gross (grins).
How are your listeners like?
N: They are such a fun bunch of people. And they take the battle very seriously. It’s great to see them getting so involved in our show.
J: We’ve received emails from listeners from Australia, Middle East, Los Angeles and Minnesota. It is amazing how these people found our website as the show can be heard live.
Have you gotten into any trouble with things you say on air?
N: Well… There was only once where some listeners misunderstood what we had said about the 9/11 incident. We were talking about celebrating life but a few people wrote in to complain.
J: Our company did an investigation and it was just a misunderstanding. Besides, our topics are usually light in nature.
What is your working relationship with each other?
N: We have been working with each other for about a year. Although it seems we are bashing it out on the show, the truth is we are close buddies.
J: We hang out together outside work; share our problems with each other, so it’s a great working relationship.
Nothing more?
N: (laughs). It’s more of a brother sister relationship. Nothing else like others would like to believe.
J: I can’t look at her in that way. It’s just wrong because our relationship is so platonic.
What else are you involved in?
N: I used to do some theatre but work is getting tight so I had to stop. But I still sing in a band known as South Central every now and then. Other than that I do some scriptwriting and some emcee jobs.
J: I too do some emceeing here and there. Also I do some research for our show as well.
Let’s talk about Internet lifestyle a bit. Do you have any favourite websites?
N: I love jokes sites, Yahoo! News and The Drudge Report. These sites are my source of news and entertainment.
J: I have tons I think, Soccernet, Download.com and Youtube. I surf around for mobile games as well.
What about blogs?
N: Oh, me and another two friends share a blog. It’s more like a tool of keeping in contact with the happenings in our lives because we stay far from each other. Of course I’m not telling you the URL (laughs).
J: You name it I’m in it. I’ve got Friendster, Multiply and MySpace. I usually post weird and funny stuff I see on the Internet on MySpace. I also Skype a lot too. It’s cheap.
Last question. What do you like most doing?
Both: We love listening to ourselves! (laughs)
