Slim is in for mobile phones and LG Electronics is certainly on the slimming bandwagon with its LG KG810 clamshell measuring under 15mm deep when folded.

It’s rich in lifestyle features, yet would be the perfect companion in corporate boardrooms and feature-wise, the tri-band KG810 is a foldable version of the LG KG800 Chocolate slider.

Design
It looks impressive with its satin-black inner surfaces and back, a layer of protective clear, glossy plastic covering its front and main screens and chrome trimming along the sides and top of its flip. Unfortunately the glossy plastic reveals fingerprints and grease marks too obviously.

Its large 49.8mm, 176 x 220 pixels, 262K colours TFT screen is very crisp and clear with vibrant colours, while it’s 96 x 96 pixels, 65K colours front display is placed in the middle of its front cover.

The white numbers and letters on its large, tactile black keys are easily seen, while the oversized numbers and letters displayed on its screen, are visible to all but the blind.

Menu and other selections are made by pressing either its upper-most left soft key or its round  “OK” button in the middle of its four-way navigation ring, and to go back simply the button with the capital “C” below it’s navigation ring or press its upper right key to do the same thing.

Its large hinge joining its two halves is solid, opens closes smoothly and with some practice I could open and easily close it with one hand.

Its 1.3MP CMOS camera situated on its front panel lets you take pictures portrait style by pressing its OK button or in landscape style with the phone held sideways and pressing the shutter release button on its side, to the right of its navigation ring.

Feature
LG certainly has good taste, as it include eight artistic bitmap and two animated GIF images as choices for the KG810’s main or front screen wallpapers.

It has 30 x 64-channel polyphonic ringtones, including 20 for call and other alerts, 10 tones and 36 icons for picture (EMS) messaging and ample 128MB shared internal memory for storing MP3/AAC music files, images and pictures taken with its 1.3MP camera, which takes sharp and clear pictures mainly under outdoors during the day.

Its 1,000 contact address book should be sufficient for most businessmen. Besides the usual General, Silent, Outdoor, etc profiles, the KG810 comes with an “Offline” profile or aircraft mode which turns off phone part, so you can listen to your favourite MP3 or AAC songs, watch or record videos, take pictures, play games, check your schedule, appointments, perform calculations and unit conversions without interfering with the aircraft’s delicate electronics.

ExtrasImage
Bluetooth 1.2 connectivity lets you transfer pictures and music files between phones, and between phone and PC. It also has a USB port but no infra-red nor expanded memory slot.

Java games are Zoo Zoo Club, similar to Bejewelled, except that you switch faces of cute zoo animals, instead of jewels, to form a line which disappears. The other is Sudoka, a 3 x 3 number matrix puzzle game.

It’s battery lasted about a week, mainly on standby but began draining fast once I started testing it.

Overview
The LG KG810 is an ergonomic, easy-to-use, feature rich and practical phone for most users, with great features like to please young and old alike.
