Mobile Journalist Daphne Iking rose to prominence as the friendly face on TV3’s successful Explorace. That success has paved the way in establishing her as an in-demand host, both for live events and for television shows such as Majalah Tiga and My Australian Adventure. Daphne now looks forward to making an impact as an actress, having recently made her debut on KL Lights. She is currently hosting ntv7’s The Breakfast Show.

What time is it on?
The Breakfast Show airs from 8am to 10am, Mondays to Fridays.
Is it a deskbound job?
Absolutely not. In fact, I have to be quite mobile, running here and there to do reporting as a broadcast journalist.
Does the show have a segment dedicated solely to gadgets?
We have a segment where we talk about IT, and this definitely includes gadgets. However, this segment isn’t as regular as I want it to be. Slowly but surely, it will become a regular fixture.
Do you own any cool gadgets?
I do! I have a really slick-looking white Sony PSP (Playstation Portable) which I use to play Galaga, a classic arcade game. And I also have an iPod.
I can see you with an iPod, but you don’t seem to be a gamer,
so what’s with the PSP?
I’m not really big into games but it’s cool to pass the time away. But I’ll be giving the PSP to my kid brother soon. I promised it to him if he did well in his exams, and he got a whole bunch of As.
Any other interesting gadgets?
Well, I have a collection of battery-operated buzz toys that I buy from the different places I’ve traveled to.
Hmm… vibrating toys?
Ha…ha… I didn’t say I use them. They’re just fun to look at! I have expensive and elaborate ones that I get from places like London, and cheap simple ones from China!
Right! Let’s move on! Aside from television, what else do you do?
I host events, modeling and am also on the celebrity editorial board of a local lifestyle magazine called Eve & Adam.
What else are you keen on?
I like children. One of my big plans is to one day open my own kindergarten or daycare centre. I also like to do more humanitarian work with the youth.
Do you have the patience to work with kids?
I think I do. And I think kids like me too!
You do some charity work too, right?
One of the first beauty pageants I won was the Unduk Ngadau in Sabah where I’m from. It gave me exposure to different charity organisations and I would love to go back one day and contribute to the society that shaped me and led me to where I am today.
Err, what does Unduk Ngadau mean?
Oh! (laughs) It’s Kadazan for Virgin Rice Queen! (laughs harder!)
