The August edition of Mobile Monday was by far the largest yet. There were more than a hundred people present.
This was slightly surprising given that it was held over in Cyberjaya, which is not exactly the best place to drive to after office hours. So why the large turnout?
Actually it’s easy to figure out why. MDEC hosted the event and everyone came to hear the CEO of MDEC, Badlisham Ghazali, speak.
(Badlisham, CEO of MDEC)
Participants ended up getting a double dose as both Badlisham and MDEC Vice President Kamil Othman addressed those present.
I’m sure those present were happy with what they conveyed.
MDEC is placing a lot of importance in mobile and they have all kinds of initiatives to offer.
I found their plans to hold regular sessions where entrepreneurs interested in getting funding and other assistance can turn up and make short pitches of their venture instead of having to prepare long business case proposals.
In short, MDEC has money and help to offer but as Kamil said, money is only part of the picture. If given money, can developers come up with world class applications and content? No more lousy content, they are looking to compete on the world stage.
There weren’t just corporate big shots at the event. In the true spirit of Mobile Monday, a lot of young entrepreneurs were there too.
The youngest probably is still at college. I met, Jarod Fong, the Joint CEO of a start-up called Hatchlings. This interesting venture was set up by a group of ten MMU students to create online games. He was there to check out whether they should also venture into mobile gaming.

(Jarod Fong)
I asked Jarod how’s the going and he said that it was tough but exciting. They have worked on some game concepts but scraped them midway through development because they felt that the games were not compelling enough.
Maybe Jarod should talk with MDEC. They both think alike.
