Nokia announced that it would continue work it started earlier that will bring its mobile software offerings together into Ovi, the store that is modelled after the Apple App Store.
The strategy is right, of course, but they have some catching up to do.
As I wrote in my latest Mobility column in Mobile World magazine, “By the time you read this, the Apple iPhone App Store should have had reached the 1 billion app download mark. Look at the figure very carefully; it’s one billion, not a million. To put it in perspective there are only 6 billion of us humans walking around on Earth.”
Those are figures Nokia should have achieved first given that they have vastly more phones out in the market. The difference, I believe, is in how mobile developers are encouraged and approached. If you make it easy for them, bring entry cost down and most importantly, if you show them some respect, they will support the platform.
