If you have read our recent post about Sony Ericsson will be known as Sony, here's the latest update. Sony is paying €1.05bn in cash to buy out its partner in mobile telephony. However, its partner gets ongoing patent rights and ownership of some key intellectual property as security.
Looks like both sides agree to this pay out. You can expect the whole transition to complete by January 2012. Looks like by doing so, it allows Sony to include mobile phones into their product range. Remember, previously, Sony Ericsson and Sony is not quite the same entitiy. And at the same time, Ericsson can fully concentrate on the network infrastructure.
In the beginning, Sony Ericsson was a jointly owned company. They have been making phones for quite some time. The partnership work because it is based on Sony's experience of consumer electronics and Ericsson's knowledge (and patents) in radio technologies. That's what hooked them up 10 years ago, when radio was arcane, but these days the radio component of a smartphone is just a drop-in module along with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and all the other bits which make up a smartphone.
