Last Saturday Nokia and famed Angry Birds games developer Rovio (both coincidently are Finnish companies) kicked off an attempt to create a world record worthy of mention in the annals of the Guinness World Records for 'most people playing in a mobilephone relay.' The event kicked off at the Boulevard Strip, Low Yat Plaza from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Anthony Wilson, Nokia's head of marketing Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei says that with the help of Malaysians, they are attempting to achieve the Guinness World Record for the most people playing in a mobilephone game relay on a single device; a Nokia N8.
Guinness World Records adjudicator, Elizabeth Smith also expresses her anticipation towards Nokia's attempt (in due time we will give you the official results from Nokia). She hopes to witness a successful record attempt.
"The record for the most people in a mobilephone gaming relay is a great example of how record breaking requires team work, a huge amount of logistical planning and organisation, determination and also courage. It's a very brave feat on the part of Nokia malaysia to attempt a brand new Guinness World Record, yet to be attempted," Smith says.
Update: Word is out that the event achieved the world record with 2030 participants involved in the game relay.
After 10 hours of play from 11:00 am on Saturday, 11th June 2011, the last player, Mohd. Reza, on the Nokia N8 device marked player number 2030, officially created a new Guinness World Records for “most people in a mobile phone game relay” at the Nokia World’s Biggest Angry Birds Playground.
Ville Heijari, Vice President of Franchise Development, ROVIO, the representative of Angry Birds was also present at the event.
Smith, with the assistance of witnesses from Gerhana Ska Cinta, verified the record attempt and certified the new record now stood with Nokia Malaysia. The Guinness World Records certificate was presented to Antony Wilson of Nokia, while Ville Heijari, Vice President of Franchise Development a.k.a. 'Bird Whisperer' of Rovio was on site to witness.
“It brings me great pleasure to confirm that with this new world record of ‘Most people in a mobile phone game relay’, Nokia and Malaysia have earned its place in history. I would like to congratulate Nokia and all who have participated in today’s record-breaking achievement in setting a new record benchmark in the world – a strong testimonial of team work, smooth logistical planning and organisation, determination, and courage,” said Smith.
Speaking about the new record, Antony Wilson, Nokia Head of Marketing Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei said: “We are absolutely ecstatic that Nokia Malaysia is now part of the prestigious Guinness World Records with the record for the “Most people in a mobile phone game relay”. We are proud to have connected with 2030 participants and we hope that they had a good time with us at the event.”
The fair ground had also many other activities related to the Angry Birds genre such as 'reverse bungee jumping' (gives you a being-in-a-catapult-like experience), catapulting stuffed Angry Birds at stuffed Green Pigs in their simulated blocks of wood and concrete fort (the video gives you an idea how it works), flash mobs and Angry Birds mascots; just to name some.
The Angry Birds game has been available on Nokia devices since October 2010 via the NokiaOvi Store and has turned up a partnership with the first major game to take advantage of Near Field Communication (NFC) technology via Angry Birds Free With Magic preinstalled in the Nokia C7. Angry Birds has been downloaded over 140 million times worldwide.
