Mobile Gaming January 2012

  • PDF

Looks like we are at the end of yet another month; Nothing to worry about though as 2012 is definitely not the end of the world. Need proof? Check the expiry dates on some of your stored food items. Anyway, here are four games which were reviewed over the past 31 days.

Super Crate BoxSuper Crate Box
Platform: iOS
Price: USD1.99
Developer: Vlambeer vof

This game can be summed up in three words: repetition, repetition, repitition. Yes I am sure you have grasped the concept by now. The game is all about collecting crates. These crates contain random weapons, so it is completely your luck whether you get the hated dual pistols, the terrifying disc gun or the other awesome weapons like grenade launcher. To get pass the first level, you need to collect a total of 10 crates in one round, without dying beforehand of course. Now, this is where the trickiness begins. The enemies here are extremely dangerous; one single touch will cause instant death. Jumping on them will not help at all and yes, I tried it Super-Mario style. The only thing that can kill them is the fire at the end of the road, or the weapons you hold. After collecting a certain number of crates, you unlock even more weapons. The game’s price is due to its addictive nature; for instance, I wasted a whole hour when I first started playing when I had meant to play for only fifteen minutes. Besides that, it is also a game ported over from the PC. The older generation would probably remember it. All in all, truly a superb game.

Hank Hazard: Stunt HamsterHank Hazard: The Stunt Hamster
Platform: iOS
Price: USD0.99
Developer: Chillingo

Several days ago, Chillingo released this game and it is definitely one to watch as it has all the right ingredients for a successful game: A cute animal, physics based and, well, that’s all that is needed actually. So Hank Hazard is the name of an adorable hamster who dreams of becoming the world’s first stunt hamster. There are more than 100 levels offered and it takes speed and genius-ness to gain nuts bonus. There is also a chance for you to collect golden stars which unlock extra levels. Similar to all physics-based games, you need imagination and precision to get it going. You have to avoid fire pits and electrical grills and make use of punching gloves and the likes to get to your target. A fantastic physics puzzler game for only USD0.99

Trial Xtreme 2 HDTrial Xtreme 2 HD
Platforms: iOS, Android
Price: Free version and Paid version which costs USD1.99
Developer: Deemedya

Adrenaline junks who prefer pulling off stunts in midair than going around a track in circles will welcome this game with wide open arms while singing praises to the developers. Trial Xtreme was madly popular and the second edition was just released on both iOS and Android. It has a total of 32 levels set across 5 challenging environments which should satisfy that BMX itch of yours. Basically you have to negotiate your way through ramps, tires, rocks and more. The fact that is built on  the NVIDIA(R) PhysX(R) should tell you a little bit about how realistic the rider and bike physics are. I got the free version which offers 3 levels as a teaser and even though am not a huge fan of these sort of games, I must say that the game really is that good. I mean it has to be right, seeing that the first one had over 4 million downloads.

One Epic GameOne Epic Game
Platform: iOS
Price: USD0.99
Developer: Chillingo

This game could have been so much more, sadly, I found it lacking in quite a few aspects. Let me list out what they got right; A superb name and superb music. That’s it. The usual controls are here. Left is jump while right side is to shoot. Hold the jump button longer to jump higher. Somehow though, it just didn’t feel right. Something was missing. Maybe it was the excitement, but what exactly, I’m not sure. Hopefully the upcoming updates will bring about just the right element. Oh this is set in post-apocalyptic times by the way. Anyway, as the game description goes, there is only one tough action hero who can save us all. Unfortunately, he is busy, so it is up to you. Kinda odd right? Only one action hero but now, you can do it too. There is a Story Mode as well as Free Run. Actually, it is actually a newer and modified version of Monster Dash. Personally, I find Jetpack Joyride way better. But then again, it is personal preference after all; To each his own.
